What Is the Machine—and Why Is It Asleep?

The “machine” represents your biological and psychological systems, operating on autopilot to navigate daily life. Left unchecked, this machine chases routine desires—comfort, success, validation—while ignoring higher aspirations. Most people are unaware of this "sleeping state," and are therefore resigned to drifting through life without direction.

The first step is recognizing this condition. The machine isn’t flawed—it’s simply asleep. It needs awakening, not perfection. Without this realization, we risk missing life’s real purpose.

The Essential Self

Your essential self is the core of your being—the part of you that transcends appearances, achievements, and social roles. Transformation occurs when the machine becomes a factory for change, refining the raw materials of your experiences into something extraordinary.

But here’s the catch: the essential self cannot directly awaken the machine. It has only one power: will of attention. The will of attention can be used to awaken the machine over time.

This is done by gently placing the attention of the essential self onto the machine, observing the workings of the machine without judgment. This process requires commitment and patience.

The Path to Objective Change

Unlike superficial self-help methods, real transformation begins with awakening the machine. This involves three crucial realizations:

  1. The machine is not you. It can be seen as a tool—a factory designed to facilitate change in your essential self.
  2. Awakening the machine is your responsibility. No one else can flip the switch for you.
  3. Awakening requires will and attention. Consistent subtle effort, guided by the will of attention, gently stirs the machine from its slumber.

Imagine your machine as a factory. The essential self enters the factory at birth as raw material. At death, the essential self emerges from the factory.

If the machine has been running cold, lifeless, and unengaged, the essential self is unchanged by its passage through. But when the machine has been awake, the experiences of life are used to transform the essential self. This makes life meaningful because a process of inner evolution is happening.

What Happens If the Machine Stays Asleep?

A life spent in slumber is a wasted opportunity: genuine sin. The essential self remains unchanged, emerging at the end of life as it began—untouched by the richness of human existence. We have walked through a factory of infinite potential and left with empty hands.

This failure isn’t due to ignorance. Deep down, most people know they could know their purpose for existence but do nothing about it. “The secret keeps itself” is an apt description of this condition. The allure of comfort and routine blinds us to the need for transformation.

A Living Machine

At its best, the awakened machine serves as a living system—a factory powered by electrical and chemical forces. This energy fuels an extraordinary transformation, enabling the essential self to carry forward some of the wisdom and attributes of your human life.

However, this process requires the machine to be alive and engaged. Without this vitality, the potential for growth is squandered. The essential self leaves the machine at life’s end, unchanged and unprepared for whatever lies beyond.

Don’t Waste the Opportunity of Life

To sleepwalk through life is to commit a profound error. Human existence offers a rare and precious chance to awaken, transform, and evolve. The path to awakening begins with attention and continues with deliberate effort.

The question isn’t whether you’re capable of transformation—it’s whether you’ll choose to awaken. Life can be more than just a drift. It’s a journey waiting for you to take the wheel.

Will you allow your machine to remain dormant, or will you begin the work of awakening today? The choice is yours.
